TABLEAU

When we think of tableau in photography we recall the theatrically staged scenes from the early days of the medium and the Renaissance paintings that inspired them. The Tableau vivant began in the theater, where live performance revitalized works of art. In these "living pictures," the dramatic stories of antiquity, empires, and society were brought to life in new contexts. Photography challenges us to freeze stories at pivotal moments. In photographic tableaux we observe narratives that are either created in a studio or documented in the world. In addition to individual frames, the tableau can take on the form of panorama, sequence, or composite imagery. The structure of the frame informs our relationship to people and objects while also defining a heightened sense of drama and narrative complexity. Barthes defined photography as a primitive theatre. How can a still image show life's daily complexity? In our own work, how do we portray these complex narratives? Who are the players on our stage? What are the "living pictures" of our time?
